Introduction to the Bobath Approach and Cerebral Palsy for Therapy Assistants

Overview 

This is an online, self-paced course for therapy assistants, carers and students providing an introduction to the Bobath Approach to the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.

You'll learn about the Bobath Concept and cerebral palsy and gain understanding of key issues to help you in your work with children and young people who have cerebral palsy and allied neurological conditions.

This course is run by the Bobath Centre, based on previous courses which have been developed over many years, by very experienced Bobath tutors, who have extensive knowledge and experience of treating children with cerebral palsy and of teaching therapists and students.

Who can apply?

If you work or are hoping to work with children or young people with cerebral palsy, and want to understand more about their difficulties and how you can help, then this course is for you. 

 

Course structure

The course comprises of two parts:

Part 1 – online modules, to be completed in your own time

Part 2 – attendance at the Bobath Centre on the 23rd May 2024  following completion of Part 1   (please email [email protected] to advise you have booked)

Teaching and assessment

You'll learn through presentations, videos, practical group work and will be guided to a list of relevant articles to read.

There is no formal assessment to pass this course. However, we will invite you to participate in a short quiz at the end of each module to assess your own learning and consolidate your knowledge.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Give an overview of the Bobath Concept and how it is applied to children with cerebral palsy
  • Describe the different types of cerebral palsy, how they affect function and some principles of treatment
  • Understand how therapists working within the Bobath concept apply their skills to activities such as play and communication
  • Practice handling techniques on each other and problem solve how you might use these with children who have cerebral palsy
